In honour of the victims of two totalitarian regimes exemplified by Dr. Milada Horáková who was executed by the communist regime

You are standing in the garden called Ztracenka (the Lost Garden) in the area of Albertov slopes below Karlov in Prague 2. This garden is situated in the historic conservation district of the capital city of Prague that was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1993.

The garden was redesigned by Michal Gavlas and the renovation was finished in 2010.

This beautiful and peaceful place was chosen to be the site of the monument to honour the thousands of victims of nazism and communism in this country throughout 20th century.

The epitome of how inhumane the totalitarian regimes were is the fate of Dr. Milada Horáková (1901–1950), a Czech politician that was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Nazis and subsequently sentenced to death by the communists in a fabricated trial.

The monument was designed by Ladislav Sorokáč.

Ondřej Tuček – the architect who completed the construction documents for the monument project wrote:

“The fate of Milada Horáková is the purest example of the clash of an individual with absurd and inhumane evil. Our design reflects this clash by using one white pebble that is being crashed from two sides by the crude power of rough unworked boulders.

The immaculate white of the marble pebble stands for kindness and goodness of not only Milada Horáková, but of all the fighters against totalitarian regimes. The marble withstands both the palatable pressure from the outside and the less material forces of water and time. The black granite boulders symbolise the self-evident menace that only a few are brave enough to resist.”

The project was realised by Klub dr. Milady Horákové, Na Planině 1393/13, Praha 4 – Krč

The design of the monument is the result of open artistic competition that the Klub organised.

The monument was first presented to the public on October 1, 2018.
